If you happen to be in New York this month, check out the
Museum of Chinese in America located at 70 Mulberry Street in NYC's Chinatown. They currently have two complimentary exhibits,
Have You Eaten Yet? and
Chop Suey. Both are interesting and informative exhibits focusing on the earliest of cultural contributions by Chinese-Americans,
Chinese food. Have You Eaten Yet? is a mini-history of Chinese restaurants in the U.S. with a great display of delicious restaruant ephemera dating back some 70-80 years and including menus, matchbooks, postcards and even two quite un-P.C. board games.
Chop Suey consists of a salon-style wall of photographs by Rick Wong depicting the colorful neon signs of several "chop suey" houses in the pacific northwest. Included with each photo are quotes from the restaurant's owners as well as a few interesting paragraphs telling the origins of each eatery.
