Call For Entries

A new exhibit is in the works tentatively entitled "Targeted: The Subversion of Brand America" that focuses on corporate and brand logo parodies--but with a twist. All of the examples of logo parodies will exist on t-shirts, hats or other clothing items and adorned by the folks who own them. Why only show logos that are worn on clothing? There is a particular statement being made by an individual who chooses to sport a brand on their body, identifying them with the product, its image, and values. The same is true for someone choosing to wear a logo parody, but for obviously different reasons.

The introductory essay to this exhibit will outline the origins of and our rising obsession with brand identification as well as its broader implications in terms of the exporting of popular culture and current globalization trends. Likewise, the essay will delve into the world of corporate and brand parody, anti-consumerism and the anti-globalization movement.

This is where you come in. I need your photos of people wearing logo parody t-shirts, etc..., but I want to focus on the logo itself, not the person wearing it. I am sure you are a great photographer, but that's not the focus with this exhibit. It's the logos, but most importantly that they are worn on articles of clothing, as this forms the basis for my argument. Just fill the frame of the camera with the shirt so that it is the most prominent object in the image. I hope to have at least 40 good pieces in order to launch the exhibit. Please email high quality JPEG images and include the following information about the piece:

- Location (City, State, Country)
- Title of the shirt (if applicable)
- Your Name
- Your Mailing Address
- Whether or not you wish to be credited on the site
- Your Email Address (this will not be posted, it's just for me to contact you)

If your entry is selected--as I'm sure most will be--I'll send you some cool stickers and junk (provided you send me your mailing address). More info will come. Thanks & happy hunting!

UPDATE: This exhibition was canceled as I bow in humble submission to Christian Logo Parody T-Shirts and the Mark of the Beast project.

Ready.gov - Be Informed Paranoid

This web site is truly demented. I was thinking it would be a good source for parody, but it's just too good on its own.

Back from NOLA

I got back from New Orleans around midnight on Saturday and had to rush home to start the chili. For the chili cook-off. Nevermind. Anyway, I got a lot of great shots for the sign collection as well as the upcoming logo parody exhibit. Not only that, I went to my folks house and managed to unearth some old Whacky Packages stickers and Mad magazines from my youth. These will certainly make it into the exhibit. Oh, and the goats are still coming along. Give them another week or so before they show up.

Bock Update

The intro essay is over 2,000 words and I'm not even half way done. I think you will all be pleased with the final product. The labels are terrific. I just need to finish writing, do a little more research on the labels and upload it. This will probably not go live until the week after next.

Homeward Bound

I leave for New Orleans in about 6 hours. Just going down to get a change of scenery, seek out some more old signs, take pics of folks wearing corporate logo parody t-shirts, and drink a Pims Cup or two at the Napoleon House. I'll try to report from down yonder.

Bock Beer Labels and a Homonym Gone Awry

Devilish goats rear their ugly heads in these sinister looking beer labels from the U.S. and around the world. Includes a little bit of history on where this strange iconography came from.

45rpm Record Label Designs

Feast your eyes on this assortment of about one hundred labels and logos dating from the 1950s to the 1970s. I've been collecting these for a long time and thought I would share some of my favorites.
